Wave-front coding(WFC)is a well-known technique for extending the depth of focus of an imaging lens. We experimentally examined characteristics of an optimized free-form phase mask (FPM) that has already been confirmed to be able to extend the on-axis and off-axis depth of focus to much larger values than those for the conventional cubic phase mask (CPM), and we demonstrated the good performance of the FPM under various conditions.
