The research activities and interests of his Optical Science and Engineering Laboratory cover theoretical studies on random light fields, development of computer aided optical instruments, fabrication of optoelectronic sensors, image recovery on digital computers, and many other fields.

Highlights of recent years include: Dynamic properties of laser speckles, Laser scanning heterodyne microscopy, High power diode laser velocimeters, Optical fiber velocity sensor, Scale and rotation invariant optical correlator, Computer generated hologram for pattern recognition, Optical neural net, Maximum entropy method for signal recovery, Phase recovery, Blind deconvolution, Phase conjugate optics, and Adaptive optics.
